Durham pace bowler Steve Harmison will be fit to rejoin the England squad for the forthcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

Ashington-born Harmison missed the recent second Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong with a back injury.

But English Cricket Board Chief Medical Officer Dr Peter Gregory today insisted the problem should not prevent Harmison from playing in the Sri Lanka series, which starts on December 2.

Dr Gregory said: "Scans suggest there is no serious cause for the pain Stephen felt in his lower back.

"He will continue to undergo treatment and strengthening work for his back at the ECB National Academy and I am optimistic he will rejoin the England Test squad in Sri Lanka."

Andrew Flintoff, meanwhile, will step up his exercise programme to cure his troublesome groin problem once and for all and maintain his position as England's frontline all-rounder.

The Lancashire vice-captain enjoyed the most consistent season of his international career last summer, winning the man-of-the-series award against South Africa. …
