Carlisle Find Cup Is Just as Tough

Carlisle were looking to the FA Cup to provide some relief from the pressures of Third Division football but were given a stark reminder of why their season is at rock bottom.

Poor defending and poor finishing is a potent cocktail for failure and once on-loan Newcastle striker Calvin Zola had broken the Cumbrians' resistance with the opening goal on 34 minutes, there was only going to be one winner.

Next Saturday sees a return to league action with the visit of Mansfield Town and even with less than half the season gone Carlisle are facing games they must not lose.

Their only clear-cut chance of the first half fell to Brian Wake but a weak shot was saved by Les Pogliacomi.

Former Newcastle reserve Dave Beharall went close with a looping header on to the top of the net from John Sheridan's free-kick before the opening goal arrived.

Dean Holden played a through ball for Zola and he showed composure to draw Glennon before slotting home. …
