Newcastle United Reserves sat disappointed in their Kingston Park dressing room after a late Middlesbrough goal saw the Teessiders go away with a 2-2 draw.

But Tommy Craig's side were lifted when Sir Bobby Robson popped his head into the dressing to say how well they had gone in their Barclaycard Premiership Reserve League North game.

Craig said today: "We were by far the better team and the players deserved more than to just draw the game.

"They were a bit disappointed afterwards but the gaffer came down and gave them all a lift by saying how well they had played."

Although Middlesbrough included Jonathan Greening, Chris Riggott and Massimo Maccarone, all eyes were on Jonathan Woodgate as the United central defender got his first game since the draw with Bolton Wanderers at St James' Park on September 20 because of his double hernia operation.

That is all eyes but the Middlesbrough defence as the England international headed on Martin Brittain's corner for Lewis Guy to knock in to give United the lead. …
