Refugee Is Jailed for Hit-Run Death

An asylum seeker has been jailed for two months after driving into a pensioner and running away as his victim lay dying in the road.

Kawa Ali Said Abdullah, 21, from Dixon Street, Stockton, appeared at Teesside Magistrates Court just over a year after the death of 79-year-old Dick Foley.

Magistrates jailed the Kurdish refugee for a total of two months, after he pleaded guilty to failing to stop after the accident in Norton Road, Stockton, on November 3 last year.

Mr Foley's friend Mary Griksaitis said afterwards: "Any sentence does not alter the fact that Dick is not here and we are now coming up to our second Christmas without him."

The court heard how Mr Foley had received massive injuries after he was thrown off his bicycle onto the roof of Abdullah's Vauxhall Cavalier and died before reaching hospital.

Prosecution lawyer Vivienne Turner described how the defendant had stopped his car after the crash, but fled minutes later. …
