Military surveillance is difficult, said Douglas "Bernie" Bernreuter: Finding leaky roofs, at least in comparison, is easy. Using skills he developed in the Army, Bernreuter is co-owner, with his brother Chuck, of International Imaging Technologies, a company that uses thermal cameras to inspect roofs and walls, to track pollution in rivers and fires in landfills. IIT performs walk-throughs on new houses and takes to the air to scan larger areas -- including commercial roofs -- for problems.

What sets your company apart? We're trying to take the concept to the next level. The industry hasn't been very technologically innovative.

How has your company grown? We just opened up another division. It's coming along real good. (The new division searches for signs of moisture that would betray the presence of mold and checks to make sure insulation is installed properly.)

What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in getting customers? It's an educational process. …
