I don't know about you but on a cold, wet Monday night (and it was in October) I don't expect to have to wait for a table. But that's exactly what we had to do at Al Forno.

However, we didn't mind, it was only a 10 minute wait, and the fact that it was packed at just past 7pm underlined the reputation for top class nosh this Italian restaurant has earned itself over the years.

And we were lucky. The party that came in just after us were informed that their wait would be two hours.

From the outside this place is deceptive. It looks incredibly small but when you get in there's a massive eating area to the rear and then two more floors of tables and chairs.

And although it's very modern it manages to retain a real Italian feel.

The place was packed, but despite the noise you could chat away without shouting.

Eventually we were shown to our table just opposite the bar area. I found the menu slightly more expensive than your run-of-the-mill Italian, but then this is no run-of-the-mill restaurant. However, it still offers great value for money. There was a vast choice of starters and main meals, plus the daily specials board.

For hot starters there was a choice of blue cheese stuffed mushrooms served with apple salad (pounds 4.25) and Fegato Di Vitello (calves liver served with bacon, onion and a light sage jus) pounds 5.95. Meanwhile the cold offerings included fine sliced marinated beef with rocket leaves, Parmesan cheese and the chef's own dressing (pounds 5.95) or chicken liver pate (pounds 4.25), amongst many others.

Our party of four decided to forego the starters and have a selection of tomato and cheese garlic breads (pounds 2.35 each) to munch on.

As you'd expect, there was plenty of pasta and pizza dishes to choose from plus a vast choice of chicken, meat and fish dishes. …
