Showdown in Class AAAA; Playoff Position and More at Stake for Ware County, Thomas County Central

WAYCROSS -- It's hard to remember a bigger game at Memorial Stadium than tonight's showdown between Thomas County Central, ranked No. 1 in AAAA, and No. 4 Ware County.

Thomas County Central is 9-0 and has been ranked atop the polls all season. Ware is 8-1, its only blemish a two-point loss to Lowndes in the third week of the season.

For comparison, veteran observers of South Georgia football are flashing back to 1960-'61 when Waycross High won back-to-back state championships at Memorial Stadium. Or 1961, when Waycross played for the Class A championship on Friday night and Ware County High play Carrollton High for the Class B crown on Saturday night.

"It's huge,'' said Ware County coach Dan Ragle. "It's hard to measure just how big it is. It has all kinds of ramifications."

The winner will likley have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. But there's even more at stake, says Ragle, who came to Ware County High five years ago from Americus. …
