The Clay County School Board will undergo its annual leadership shuffle next week, with Charles Van Zant ending his one-year stint as chairman and vice chairman Lisa Graham in line to succeed him.

The board will elect new officers at a special meeting Tuesday, and is also expected to renew the annual contact of its attorney and consider a state-recommended salary increase for themselves.

Van Zant, who works for the Florida National Guard and this year became a father for the first time, said he was honored to serve as chairman but was looking forward to having more time with his family.

But this week, Graham said she was still pondering whether she could take on the role again. Now in her fourth four-year term on the board, she has been chairwoman twice before.

In addition to her board responsibilities, she works full time as director of the Bradford County school district's alternative school and is studying for her master's degree in educational leadership at Nova University.

"I stay busy," she said. "I don't want to seem like I'm not giving the School Board my all, because I am . . . I like doing this job and helping people. . . . I care a lot about the kids."

Still, the board leader's duties, which include presiding at meetings and representing the board at many civic and government functions, can be time-consuming.

"I've been thinking and praying and thinking and praying," Graham said.

Meanwhile, Van Zant was anticipating having more time in his schedule.

"Mostly, it's been very enjoyable. I kind of enjoy running the meetings and I am always happy to represent board interests on the occasions where that is necessary," he said. "I was pleased and honored the rest of the board trusted me to go and represent them. …
