Turnovers proved costly Friday night for the West Nassau High School Warriors as they fell to Umatilla, 36-0, in the first round of the District 3-2A playoffs.

West Nassau went three and out on its first possession. After a 45-yard punt by Travis Barnett, Umatilla took over at its own 30-yard line. After picking up four first downs on the ground, Dontrel Lewis slammed it in for a touchdown with 3:26 left to play in the first quarter. A failed 2-point conversion left the score 6-0.

Michael Ross returned the ensuing kick to the 21-yard line, and the Warriors looked to be in business. The Warriors got five first downs on this drive thanks to the tough running of Luke Mizell and the athleticism of quarterback Pat Ballew.

Ballew recovered a fumbled snap and took it 22 yards to Umatilla's 17-yard line. On third and 12, Ballew made a rare bad decision, throwing while being hit. Umatilla intercepted and the ball was downed at Umatilla's 15-yard line.

The Umatilla ground attack churned out four more first downs before Marcus Weatherspoon ran it in for a touchdown with 4:45 left in the second quarter. The 2-point conversion was good, and Umatilla led 14-0.

West Nassau started its next drive at its 24-yard line. The Warriors got two first downs on the ground before going to the air. A Rooster Whittamore-to-Ross fleaflicker resulted in a 27-yard gain and a first down at the Umatilla 21-yard line.

After a 4-yard run by Ballew and two incomplete passes -- one in the end zone -- Charles Guffin missed a 39-yard field goal attempt wide right.

Umatilla broke it open in the third quarter when Charles Dobson returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and, after a successful 2-point conversion, a 22-0 lead.

Things got worse for the Warriors when star quarterback Ballew went down with a knee injury and couldn't return. …
