Deal for Stead Not Dead Yet - McCarthy

Mick McCarthy last night refused to rule out a second bid for Huddersfield Town's young striking prospect Jon Stead.

The wily Black Cats boss refused to be drawn on whether a second bid had actually been made for the 20-year-old, but conceded he had not given up hope of a deal being done in the near future.

The Terriers turned down an pounds 800,000 bid from the Black Cats last month and have told them they will have to offer around pounds 1m to have any hope of persuading them to part with their prize asset.

Sunderland are understandably keen not to get involved in a public bidding war, but have continued to monitor the progress of a player rated by his manager Peter Jackson as the best attacking prospect outside of the Premiership.

While such heady praise is designed to boost the valuation of the youngster, there is little doubt that McCarthy is a big admirer of a player who has already scored 12 goals this season, albeit in the Third Division. …
