A storm was brewing last night after district planners urged a scaling down of plans to build what could be the region's biggest windfarm on an unspoilt Northumberland moor.

The proposal for Middlemoor, next to the A1 at North Charlton, could include as many as 26 huge turbines - each five times higher than Gateshead's Angel of the North - Alnwick District Council's development control committee was told.

While no detailed plans have yet been submitted, some members said the scale of the bid would have a dramatic impact on the surrounding landscape, which is designated as an Area of High Landscape Value.

There was added concern that the final decision could rest with the Department of Trade and Industry in Whitehall, because the scale of the bid may fall outside the council's remit.

Planners at the small rural authority would then be just one of a series of consultees, asked to give their views on the development being put forward by Buckinghamshire-based National Wind Power Ltd. …
