Saturday's game against Liverpool promised much but could never quite live up to the billing.

There was a big crowd at the Riverside but many minds were still tuned into the morning's dramas on a rugby field far away in Sydney.

It was a hard act to follow.

There was plenty of midfield rough and tumble and a fair amount of flair football but, in the final reckoning, precious few glimpses of goalmouth action.

In a game where defences were on top it was Colin Cooper who was once again a real colossus. The veteran defender was even covering for the rare slip-ups by skipper Gareth Southgate.

Fellow defender Andrew Davies was brimming with confidence as a stand-in right-back. Aussie Harry Kewell's bad day continued when he failed to put the Billingham Blonde Bomber in the shade.

So, it's off to the new Blue Camp on Sunday and a great shame that the Boro picked up less than 2,000 tickets, denying many a first visit to the City of Manchester Stadium. …
