WR Johnson Makes Splash in Jags Debut; Browns Castoff Doesn't Start, but Catches Five Passes for 77 Yards

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Kevin Johnson was everything the Jaguars expected him to be Sunday.

Showing why the Jaguars had to fend off nearly half the NFL for his rights, Johnson came off the bench to catch five passes for 77 yards against the New York Jets in his Jacksonville debut.

The former Cleveland Browns wide receiver was one of the few bright spots in the Jaguars' otherwise frustrating, 13-10 loss.

"We all knew what a great player KJ was, and he showed us that out there today," quarterback Byron Leftwich said.

The Jaguars claimed Johnson off waivers two weeks ago when the Browns released their leading receiver, citing what they said was his selfishness and poor blocking.

Johnson displayed none of those traits Sunday. All the Jaguars saw instead with a dependable receiver who runs good routes and possesses big-play ability.

"I know how to the play game," Johnson said afterward. …
