Turning 100 is always a day worth celebrating but even more so when your family fly half-way around the world to be there with you.

Daniel Guinan had that honour on Sunday when his son and daughter-in-law joined him for a special party.

Around 40 friends and family packed into The Villa care home in Kibblesworth, Birtley, Gateshead, to help the retired wood machinist blow out his candles.

And among the crowd was Daniel Guinan Jnr, who moved to Adelaide in Australia 44 years ago but made a special trip back to see his dad reach 100.

The 69-year-old said: "We have come over especially for three weeks because we didn't want to miss his birthday.

"He said he didn't want a fuss but the grandchildren couldn't get over from Australia because they're too young and we are celebrating for them as well."

Birthday boy Daniel came over to Tyneside from Dublin as a young lad and settled in Byker, Newcastle.

With his five brothers and sisters he grew up on Janet Street and Ayton Street. …
