Spain: a Briton was shot in Spain, the Foreign Office said last night. Reports from Marbella said the man was in a serious condition after two men burst into his mobile phone store in the city and shot him in the leg on Monday. A policeman was also shot and injured.

FRANCE: A woman is missing after surging floodwaters swept her off a bridge in Virigneux during storms that lashed southern France, closing schools, roads and power plants and forcing the evacuation of dozens of people.

CHINA: Almost 100 students were admitted to hospital after eating breakfast apparently laced with rat poison at two school cafeterias in southern China.

USA: A 74-year-old man who has been arrested at least 400 times has been jailed for 17 years on drunk driving charges. Virldeen Redmon of Anderson, Indiana, was arrested in July while driving. Redmon's first arrest was in 1947 and he has had his driver's licence suspended for life five times.

USA: The holders of the North American rights to the Winnie the Pooh characters have hired celebrity lawyer Johnny Cochran, the man who represented OJ Simpson over the killing of his wife, to represent them in their 12-year legal fight with The Walt Disney Company in Los Angeles. …
