Newcastle's superstar defender Philippe Albert is flying in from Belgium to attend a Variety Club of Great Britain tribute dinner to legend Peter Beardsley on Monday night.

And Geordie TV actor and singer Jimmy Nail is also a top-table guest at the Marriott Gosforth Park Hotel, along with a host of footballing celebrities.

United boss Sir Bobby Robson, ex-manager Kevin Keegan, and stars like Alan Shearer, John Barnes, Les Ferdinand and Warren Barton will pay homage to one of the most talent players ever to wear a black and white shirt.

Northern Area secretary Bob Gladwin said: "The fact Albert is flying over from Belgium and Jimmy Nail phoned to ask if he could attend shows the sort of respect Peter has created over the years.

"We sold out every table within a fortnight and we've had wonderful auction prizes donated such as a 1970 Brazilian shirt signed by Pele, Peter Beardsley's last England shirt autographed by the team and David Beckham's Real Madrid shirt. …
