Designs for the redevelopment of Middlehaven Dock got an icy reception at a public airing of the plans.

The proposed modern office buildings were displayed to Linthorpe Community Council. But it decided to take action objecting to the design of the buildings, though not the principle of the development.

The council agreed to write to Middlesbrough Council and urge a more traditional style for the designs, with 'more character' and a broken skyline, for the future architectural value of the town.

Chairman George Melville said the buildings were 'a nothing in design terms' and they should be used to showcase the work of local artists.

He said: "Middlehaven is supposed to be the renaissance of Middlesbrough and all they're going to do is put up these boring rectangular boxes. This shows the lack of thinking and imagination of the designers.

"They could do a darned sight better than that.

"I think in 20 years' time we'll wish we'd done something else there. …
