Newcastle pulled off their second away win in six days to give themselves a major boost before Wednesday's third round FA Youth Cup trip to Portsmouth.

United stormed into a 3-0 lead on the 49th minute and even though Barnsley recovered to 3-1 and 4-2, the Magpies saw out a comfortable victory to climb above Sunderland into third place in the Academy League. Two goals in the first 20 minutes laid the foundations for victory. Guy Bates and Matty Pattison had already missed narrowly when in the 11th minute, Pattison lifted a shot over keeper Scott Flinders into the net from Bates' pass.

Their centre-forward Bates, now fully recovered from injury, volleyed home Ben Webster's right wing cross at the near post. Adam Oldham missed a chance to put Barnsley back in the game two minutes before half time when he chipped inches over following United keeper Adam Bartlett's miscued clearance. And the Yorkshire boys were punished four minutes after the interval when Newcastle substitute Marc Walton drove in a low cross from the right and centre-half Ryan Laight could only turn the ball into his own net from three feet. …
