Campaigners Vow to Fight School Closure

Parents vowed to take their fight to save a Wearside school to the High Court after education bosses voted to close it yesterday.

Usworth School, Washington, is due to close in 2007 under plans to cut surplus school places in Sunderland.

Sunderland's schools organisation committee voted to close the school, yesterday, in defiance of a 7,500-signature petition to keep it open.

But campaigners, including head teacher Kevin McDermid and chair of the board of governors Sarah Allsopp, pledged to fight on.

John Kelly, of pressure group Usworth and Proud, said it was now plotting a legal challenge. He said: "This is about the future of our children's education and we are not going to give up.

"We have the right to take this to the High Court and that's what we are going to do."

He said the group already had a fighting fund and would now start raising money to cover the costs of the legal battle ahead.

A 20-strong delegation of campaigners - including pupils - were in the council chamber in Sunderland yesterday to hear the committee of councillors, governors, teachers, church representatives, approve the closure plans. …
