Green Bus Opens Up New Horizons

A North-East bus company has created 35 jobs as it opens up new routes not served by rival national operators.

Green Bus, the trading name of Darlington and District Services, has been launched by local businessman and ex-Stagecoach employee Richard Cranmer, with the assistance of Government funding from the Urban Bus Challenge scheme.

The brand new Green Bus fleet has just taken to the roads of Darlington. Mr Cranmer has said he does not want to compete directly with Stagecoach and Arriva in the town, but aims to provide a more specialist service.

Darlington Borough Council has recently won pounds 1.07m in Urban Bus Challenge funding and Green Bus services will run with subsidy from that. The new company is operating from a depot on Yarm Road Business Park and will serve routes in and around Darlington, to the town's Memorial Hospital and will also bring passengers into the town from rural parts of County Durham.

Mr Cranmer has won 15 local service contracts which will he believes will generate a turnover of more than pounds 1m in their first year of operation. …
