Glynn Officer Shoots Robbery Suspect; Man Held Gun to Inn Clerk's Head, Police Say

BRUNSWICK -- An off-duty Glynn County police detective working security at a Ramada Inn shot a man Tuesday who police said was pointing a gun at a clerk's head.

Two masked men, one armed with a handgun, entered the lobby of the hotel on U.S. 341 north of Brunswick about 3:40 a.m., Assistant Police Chief Matt Doering said.

Seeing the armed man, the detective called for assistance and then saw him pointing a handgun at the head of the night auditor, Doering said. He would not identify the officer.

Believing the auditor's life was in danger, the officer fired at the gunman and hit him in the arm, Doering said.

The two men fled, Doering said, and the off-duty detective used his radio to alert other officers that the men were in a red compact car. A uniformed officer spotted the car four minutes later on nearby Spur 25, Doering said.

Four occupants of the car were taken into custody without further incident, including the wounded suspect, who was taken to Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment, Doering said. …
