Chip's Trip to Find Himself

Chip is a border collie. He's a rescue dog, so I have no idea where he came from.

So, when I was given a chance to go to the Scottish Borders for a few days I thought it might help him find a sense of identity.

I packed Chip into the boot of my hatchback - he jumped in the minute the boot opened and watched expectantly, over the top of the seats as our luggage was squeezed onto the back seat.

It took three hours to reach Dryburgh Abbey, near St Boswells, where we were staying - with a brief stop to take Chip's picture at the Scottish border.

On arrival, there was no time to waste on a two-day trip, so we went to explore the gardens.

Chip loved it. He scampered around the grass in anticipation of my boyfriend, Paul, kicking a ball for him.

Next we went to the wooded area. We could here a rustle of leaves and then silence... and then he bounded up to us as if to say, "come on, hurry up!"

Chip seemed to be enjoying himself, so we ventured out of the grounds and down to the river Tweed, just a pebble's throw from the hotel.

Chip squeals like a pig if you put him in water. I think I was more nervous than him as he approached the water's edge.

This trip was all about new experiences though!

Then he decided chasing the stones Paul was skimming across the water would be fun.

Chip cries - a lot. I could understand why he cried at a fisherman's big Labrador, but at tiny dogs the size of Yorkshire terriers?

Paul drew the short straw for the first night duty so up he got when nature called for Chip. "The grass was moving," he said on his return. "There were thousands of rabbits."

Apparently, Chip was scared of them, started to cry and ran back to the hotel door - the softie.

On Saturday, we headed for Eildon Hills and a four-mile trek around them, Melrose and Newstead. …
