Read's Moving Systems of Florida Inc. intends to build a 20,000 to 30,000-square-foot expansion at its Philips Highway center and estimates the investment at $2.1 million to $2.3 million.

Read's operates in 65,000 square feet of space among two buildings, "and we hope that we can keep growing," said Robin Sturm, chief executive officer.

Sturm said Thursday that he and business partner Robert Cox formed a limited liability company to buy the 12 acres for expansion and completed the acquisition last week.

He wants to clear the site and then break ground by April or May for completion in early 2005 before the busy summer moving season.

Plans filed with the city show that the project could comprise up to three buildings totaling 80,000 square feet. "We are going to put up one building now and we bought extra ground for future growth," he said.

Phoenix Realty Group Inc. President Ladson Montgomery is the developer.

Sturm estimates the investment in the first phase at $2.1 million to $2.3 million, which includes the land purchase.

The property is adjacent to Read's, which is at 6411 Philips Highway. The site is along Bowdendale Avenue. City files show the project could generate up to 30 jobs.

BEST BUY: The Sembler Co. took another step toward developing a Best Buy store to anchor its Shoppes at Southside center along Southside Boulevard, north of The Avenues mall. Sembler Family Partnership No. 26 is the developer of the project. Sembler applied for a construction permit to build a 45,802-square-foot Best Buy at 10280 Southside Blvd. at a cost of $1.9 million. No contractor was identified.

Sembler intends to build a 95,802-square-foot strip center comprising the Best Buy and adjacent 40,000 and 10,000-square-foot retail stores. …
