Metro passengers were hit by delays this morning following a technical problem on the Tyneside to Sunderland line. Trains were forced to slow down because of a fault with a barrier on a road crossing at Brockley Whins, South Tyneside.

The problem led to delays on Metro services across Tyne & Wear.

Mattress blaze

FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a block of flats after a mattress was deliberately set ablaze. Crews from Fossway and Wallsend attended the incident at Walker Dene House, Walker, around 11pm yesterday.

First-time act

A BUSINESSMAN has been deprived of more than pounds 30,000 after Durham Police used the Proceeds of Crime Act for the first time. Car dealer Sandro Farini, 37, had pounds 34,250 confiscated which police believed were the proceeds of crime. The money was part of pounds 68,500 seized from Mr Farini's home in Thorndale Road, Belmont, Durham.
