Whizzkids and computer boffins across Teesside have scooped a range of IT awards.

Northfield School in Stockton won the Overall UK Online Centre Award for the North-east and staff and pupils were travelling to London today for the national final.

UK Online Centres is a Government initiative aimed at improving access to computers and the Internet.

The 2003 awards recognised the achievements of more than 6,000 centres across England.

The centre at Northfield was commended for its course, which involves Year 10 pupils taking laptop computers home to teach their families basic computer skills.

And at the end of the course, the adults are invited into the school's Cyber Cafe to see how their learning can progress even further within the centre.

Centre manager, Simon Roberts, said: "It is unusual for children to teach adults, but in a situation where the children are often the experts, it makes sense for them to pass on the knowledge that they gain in school. …
