Passengers' Group Says Train Ticket Price Rises `Unavoidable'

NORTH-East train operators have won sympathy for their latest price hikes from an unlikely source.

The Rail Passenger Committee for the region says ticket price rises are always unwelcome but these are understandable and will help improve services rather than line shareholders' pockets.

RPC deputy secretary Fran Critchley said: "It's never good news for passengers when fares go up. But in this case it does seem to be unavoidable.

"There have been considerable costs over the past year."

She pointed out that the cash from these price rises was not going to the rail companies themselves but to the Strategic Rail Authority for system-wide improvements.

"What we want to see from the Government is a commitment to transport services on a level with health and education, including the money that rail needs so we can have an integrated transport system that works, with guaranteed arrival times at prices people can afford. …
