Tony Smallwood, 39, a technical sales executive at Jarrow-based Rosewood Packaging, takes us through a typical day in his working life.

6am: Get up to run on my treadmill for 30 minutes and then enjoy breakfast with my wife and 18-month-old daughter.

8am: Leave my daughter at nursery and join the traffic heading through the Tyne Tunnel, thinking about my priorities for the day.

8.30am: Arrive at work and check my emails before joining our daily production meeting where we plan the manufacturing schedule for our timber and cardboard factories. This can range from huge, heavy-duty timber cases to a short run of die-cut cartons.

10am: Back at my desk, where I deal with the day-to-day business of our busy sales, estimating and design department.

Receive a complex inquiry and head for the client's site with a colleague from our packing.

Measure machinery products, discuss how the goods should be packed and what the destination country's import requirements are in respect of the wood treatment. …
