With Christmas upon us, for the next two weeks at Tools of the Trade we thought we would give you some good motoring gift ideas.

This week we've decided to look at things to help to ensure that your friends' and family's vehicles stay safe.

More than a quarter of all recorded crime is car crime. Security devices go a long way to deter thieves, but knowing what to buy, and how much to spend, can be extremely confusing.

The device everyone is familiar with, and it's arguably the most annoying, is the car alarm. It's possible to spend thousands of pounds on one, but extremely cheap DIY alarms can be bought for less than pounds 50. But fitting one yourself can be dangerous - misplaced connections can blow circuits or activate airbags.

When choosing an alarm installer it's advisable to shop around and look for Vehicle Security Installation Board certification. After the system has been fitted, ask the technician to show you how it works.
