Three members of the same family were arrested after an armed hold-up on a shop.

A terrified woman assistant was confronted by a gang who burst into the Spar shop on Roker Avenue, Sunderland, brandishing two pistols, at 9.45am on Monday.

The raiders fled empty handed.

Det Chief Insp Neil Adamson, of Sunderland city CID said: "The woman was traumatised by the incident.

"Two males aged 19 and 16 have been charged with attempted robbery and a 20 year-old has been released on bail pending further inquiries."

The accused were due to appear before Sunderland magistrates today.

Dessert blaze

A DINNER party was abandoned when a dessert went wrong.

Four people fled the house in Duckpool Lane, Whickham, Gateshead, when flames from the banana dish set fire to grease in the extractor.

Firefighters from Swalwell, who tackled the blaze, praised the occupants for closing the kitchen door to contain the fire.
