Breen's Return Gets Put on Hold

Gary Breen will again be missing against Wimbledon this afternoon with Mick McCarthy admitting his injury had gone on for a lot longer than expected.

The Republic of Ireland international, who had been a rock in the centre of the Sunderland defence before receiving a bad knock on his knee against Coventry City a month ago, has begun to regain full movement in the joint this week.

But the 30-year-old has had to admit defeat in his attempt to return to the side this weekend and is not even certain to be fit in time for with the Boxing Day game with Bradford City.

The loss of Breen has been sorely felt with the Black Cats failing to win any of the five games they have played without him and manager McCarthy said: "It's gone on a lot longer than we thought.

"We first thought it was just a blow to the knee, but it seems he was actually kneed right on the medial ligament. The bruising has taken a long time to go away and we couldn't do anything to speed it up. …
