Two Britons were hurt in a bomb blast at a crowded Baghdad restaurant staging a New Year's Eve party.

Five people died and 35 were injured when a car bomb tore through the Nabil Restaurant, popular with foreigners.

Dr Mazen Jaafar, a surgeon at Ibn Nasees government hospital, said 21 Iraqis, one American and two Britons were injured.

Another report said three American journalists were hurt.

The restaurant had advertised a New Year's Eve party, including live music and bellydancing.

Rescuers were seen pulling people from the building as dazed and bleeding victims were helped into ambulances.

The Foreign Office said one Briton had been injured, but was unable to confirm that a second had been caught in the blast.

"A British national is being treated for superficial injuries," a spokeswoman said.

Three Los Angeles Times correspondents and four support personnel were among the wounded.

"All are being treated for injuries that do not appear life-threatening," the newspaper's spokesman, David Garcia, said. …
