Saints Will Make It Tough Says Bez

John Beresford believes Newcastle United have a mountain to climb if they are to stop the Saints marching on in the FA Cup, writes Miles Starforth.

Beresford's two former clubs face each other on Saturday at St Mary's Stadium with the Magpies smarting from a dismal festive period.

Newcastle were given one of the worst draws possible for the third round of the FA Cup and, barring Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea away, there could have been few harder places to go than Southampton.

United have not beaten Southampton on their own ground since 1972-73 and Newcastle's Premiership record against them is just two points out of 30, with two draws and eight defeats.

Beresford, who left St James' Park for The Dell in 1998, is a big admirer of what Gordon Strachan has done at St Mary's Stadium and believes they are capable of another cup run, having reached the final last year.

A goal from Arsenal's Robert Pires settled that game at the Millennium Stadium and Beresford believes the odds are against out-of-sorts United. …
