TARIQ ALI has joined the establishment at the grand old age of 60. The former student firebrand is the most surprising of the 1,003 new No doubt given his Trotskyist allegiances, he would feel unable to accept an honour from the Queen but he has found time to fill in his Who's Who entry, proudly recording his editorship of The Black Dwarf from 1968 to 1970 and his editorship of The Red Mole from 1970 to 1973.

Ali lists his recreations as "swimming, cinema, cricket, theatre", but neglects to mention his most famous pastime - manning the barricades outside the American Embassy in 1968.

In an effort to sex up the volume, both actress Kate Winslet and Channel 5 Newsreader Kirsty Young have been included.

Ali is unvailable for comment. Perhaps he's too busy filling in his application for White's.
