Due to the cold snap, Wetherby stage the first northern meeting of 2004 and it's no surprise that big fields are the order of the day.

Trainers are anxious to get a run into their novices and all three hurdle races that cater for them have attracted maximum turn-outs.

An old racing adage is the bigger the field, the bigger the certainty, and Charlie Egerton will be hoping so as he has obvious double prospects in two of them with Graphic Approach and Druids Confederacy.

Graphic Approach makes his jumping debut in the "Derwent" Novices' Hurdle after an impressive bumper success at Hereford on his first outing in this country.

He had shown promise in a couple of soft ground bumpers at Leopardstown before joining the Chaddleworth trainer, and it may turn out to be an above-average race he won last month despite the ease of his victory.

Egerton announced there and then that he would be put straight over hurdles and he would appear to have a bright future.

King Of The Arctic turned in an improved effort to open his account at Hexham, but looks vulnerable under his penalty. Direct Flight makes more appeal after his second to subsequent winner Overstrand at Market Rasen on his hurdling introduction.

Tim Easterby has chosen this event for the eagerly-awaited jumping debut of Bourgeois, who was originally bought for the winter game but has been plying his trade in staying handicaps on the Flat. He could be a high-class newcomer and is the one that poses most threat to Graphic Approach.

Druids Confederacy could not have made a more emphatic start to her hurdling career when giving a polished display to dispose of course winner Countess Camilla at Towcester. While the runner-up may have been feeling the effects of a hard race only 11 days earlier, we should take nothing away from the winner, who can defy her penalty at the main expense of Magical Field. …
