D-Day Looming for Ace Bowyer amid Op Fears

Lee Bowyer misses out on a sentimental game against his former club Leeds United at St James' Park tonight, (writes Alan Oliver).

And the Newcastle United midfielder (pictured) faces his moment of truth on Monday when he will find out whether or not he is going to miss the rest of the season.

Bowyer - he was 27 on Saturday - has been sidelined since the 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux at the end of November with a mystery hip injury.

And instead of playing against Leeds - both he and Jonathan Woodgate played against Newcastle in the corresponding fixture last season - Bowyer has been left sweating on his immediate future.

Sir Bobby Robson broke off his preparations for tonight's game to say: "The surgeon has requested that Lee does not do any work of any sort so that his hip injury can settle down.

"But he will come back into training on Monday and if he still has problems we might have to operate.

"If it comes to that, it means three months out and that will just about take care of the rest of his season, so you could say that Monday is his D-day. …
