Talks over Pounds 1m Bush Bill

Police in County Durham are still in talks with the Home Office to thrash out who will foot the bill for President Bush's November visit to the region.

Concerns had been raised that taxpayers in the county would end up paying the pounds 1m cost of the US President's pub lunch with Prime Minister Tony Blair in his Sedgefield constituency.

But today a spokesman for the force said they were still hopeful that the Home Office would meet at least some of the bill.

Blaze at offices

COUNCIL buildings have been hit in a suspected arson attack.

A burning object is thought to have been thrown through the window of social security offices at Wincomblee House, Airey Terrace, Walker, Newcastle.

The attack happened at 1am today, destroying computers and causing smoke damage to the room.
