If you fancy finding out about forensic science or learning to lip read, then sign up for a course - one of 500 organised by Gateshead Council.

Most are free and are at 70 schools, community and youth centres in the borough.

The huge range includes a few surprises, alongside more traditional ones. As well as discovering a new language, learning to use a computer or improving arts and craft skills, you can learn about holistic therapies, such as Indian head massage.

Last year the council was awarded a Grade One by the Adult Learning Inspectorate for providing learning opportunities to thousands of people every year. Over the past year more than 12,000 people took part in the hundreds of different courses on offer.

Coun John McElroy, Gateshead Council's cabinet member for learning and culture, said: "We have a commitment to get as many local people to carry on learning new skills throughout their life, whether they are eight, eighteen or eighty. …
