Economic betrayal

As the sun starts setting on Samsung's Teesside plant today we are left with only the dream of what might have been. And a feeling of betrayal at the broken promises.

The golden age heralded when the Queen came to officially open the site at Wynyard was embraced by all.

Massive investment had attracted the company to a 400-acre electronics village and in the euphoria of the moment they promised a further pounds 600m would be spent creating more than 3,000 jobs.

The future was not just bright it was brilliant.

But the champagne launch that was supposed to lift us towards a heady future has left nothing more than a horrible hangover.

The closure of the plant with the loss of 400 jobs sees the final bubble burst.

And the hopes of an economic revolution spurred by the ambition and drive of Far Eastern companies relocating here on the back of massive cash grants has faded and died.

The repercussions of Samsung's demise could hit 1,000 workers when the effect on suppliers are taken into account. …
