Community Notebook; Quilting Classes to Be Held at Community College Also, Big Bead Festival Being Held This Weekend at Morocco Shrine Temple

A new series of basic quilting classes is being offered at Florida Community College at Jacksonville's Kent Campus. Both day, night and Saturday sessions are available.

Gay Montgomery is teaching the beginning quilting classes from 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays from Jan. 22 to April 29. She's also teaching a night class from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays from Jan. 21 to April 28. Saturday sessions are available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. now through Jan. 31, Feb. 7-28 and March 13 to April 10.

Equipment is provided. And while novice students have to know how to operate a sewing machine, they don't have to be accomplished seamstresses. Students can make quilts, wall hangings or place mats.

Students should register one week prior to the beginning of class by calling Sue Davis at 381-3566.

-- Calling all Boy Scouts. The city Department of Parks, Recreation and Entertainment is offering a five-session course ending in May to help Scouts fulfill their nature merit badge requirements. The first session is 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Westside Regional Park Nature Center, 7000 Roosevelt Blvd. Scouts will learn about animals, plants and food chains. Registration is required and may be made by calling 573-2498.

A seed safari workshop for nature explorers age 7 and younger will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ringhaver Park/Ortega Stream Valley Preserve, 5198 118th St. The youngsters and their adult companions will be on the hunt for seeds and will learn what plants they will grow into.

-- What is expected to be North Florida's biggest bead show ever -- the River City Intergalactic Bead Festival -- will be Saturday and Sunday at Morocco Shrine Temple, 3800 St. John's Bluff Road. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 on Saturday (good for both days) and $4 on Sunday. …
