Mark Delaney admits reaching the Carling Cup final with Aston Villa would ease the despair he felt following his last appearance at the Millennium Stadium.

Delaney was distraught after Wales missed out on the chance of qualifying for the Euro 2004 finals following the play-off defeat to Russia in November.

The full-back took a long while to recover after his country came so close to reaching their first major finals since the 1958 World Cup finals.

But Delaney is banking on making a sooner-than-expected return to Cardiff with Aston Villa by overcoming Bolton in the two-legged League Cup semi-final, the first meeting at the Reebok Stadium tomorrow.

Delaney said: "Not to make Euro 2004 was so disappointing for everyone connected with Wales - the fans, management, players. It did take a long time to get over that.

"Euro 2004 and the Carling Cup are two different things - but if I can get back to the Millennium Stadium with Villa and get a positive result it will ease the pain. …
