Every British soldier is likely to be given enhanced body armour after North East MP Gerry Steinberg clashed with the Defence Ministry's top civil servant.

Sir Kevin Tebbit made the announcement as he was grilled by angry MPs at Westminster over the failure to supply the life-saving equipment to Gulf soldiers.

Several are said to have died as a result, including Sgt Steven Roberts, who handed his over to be used by somebody else shortly before he was shot dead.

As MoD Permanent Secretary Sir Kevin gave his evidence to the Commons Public Accounts Committee, City of Durham Labour MP Mr Steinberg, one of its members, said soldiers had died because of his department's failure.

The heated session of the all-party group came as the commanding officer of the Black Watch said his troops had been left short of equipment due to the Government's unwillingness to commit to war and start ordering vital equipment until all the diplomatic alternatives had been explored. …
