Shola Ameobi has staked his claim for Newcastle United's visit to Anfield in the FA Cup with a goal as the Magpies reserves beat Blackburn Rovers 6-3 last night.

Hugo Viana, also on target at Morecambe last night, earned praise for his performance, while Michael Chopra scored a hat-trick.

Ameobi, on his way back from a fractured cheekbone, came through the game with no problems while Viana, Darren Ambrose and Andy Griffin also played the whole match.

All are fighting for places on the bench against the Reds, with Robson hoping to field an unchanged line- up against Liverpool with Newcastle having won three and drawn one since the turn of the year.

Reserves coach Tommy Craig praised the attitude of his pounds 12.5 million side after the game.

"Shola was excellent up front - he had a smashing game," said Craig.

"I said to him afterwards that he should be tired after his performance. Michael Chopra also did very well.

"And Hugo Viana displayed the skill that he has, allied to a tremendous workrate. …
