Girls Handed ABA Chance

Article excerpt

Girl power arrives in the senior ABA championships early next month.

The ABA have invited entries from female boxers when the Tyne, Tees and Wear Championships take place at Marton Hotel and Country Club.

There are not too many women boxers in the North-east, Nicky Owens from the Wellington ABC and Amanda Coulson from Hartlepool Catholic Club being among the best-known.

But both can be expected to enter the women's championships and there could be female action at Marton if opponents are found.

The main part of the action concerns the men's championships.

The semi-finals take place at Marton Country Club on Tuesday, February 3, with the finals on Thursday, February 12.

The cream of the North-east boxing fraternity will be in action, so both nights promise to provide plenty of action.

Tickets are pounds 10 for each night, and are available from Denis Power on 01642 456795 or from the Marton Country Club.

Meanwhile, the younger boxers are gearing up for the National Schoolboys Championships.

The preliminary rounds and semi-finals of the Tyne, Tees and Wear division take place at the Belle Vue Social Club in Hartlepool on Saturday.

The finals will be at the same venue seven days later.

Chris Riley, who has won the national title three years running, heads the Teesside entry.

The English international from the Wellington ABC is boxing at Under 60kg in class 4.

The Wellington club have also entered three boxers in class 2: Marcus Wilson at U54kg, Darren Fields at U48kg and Ross Murray at U36kg.

Middlesbrough ABC boxer Imran Zaman, who has been unable to box for some time because he has been wearing a brace, returns to action in the championships.

He will box at U60kg in class 4.

Other Middlesbrough ABC entrants include Jerome Tyrrell at U71kg in class 4, Tom Taylor in class 3 at U42kg, James McLeod in class 2 at U48kg and Shaun Peacock, Tom Collins and Chris Peacock all in class 1 at U30kg, U48kg and U42kg respectively.

Andy Peacock was also due to represent the Peacock family, but has been pulled out with a back injury.

The Halfpenny ABC have seven entries. …
