Warwickshire are the first county to register an interest in England fast bowler Darren Gough.

Gough surprisingly quit Yorkshire yesterday - despite having a year left on his contract - and is yet to announce his future plans.

"Are we interested in signing him? Categorically, yes," said Warwickshire captain Nick Knight.

"He fits the bill for us perfectly."

"Not only would he strengthen our attack, but he would be a great person for the younger bowlers to learn from.

"He is not the sort of character who goes through the motions.

"Darren Gough takes huge pride in his performance and I don't think he knows how to give anything other than 100 per cent.

Gough, 33, leaves Headingley after 15 seasons and is seeking a new start with a county closer to his Milton Keynes home.

He said: "Having joined Yorkshire as a YTS when I was 18, it has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make and I was guided ultimately by the fact that I need to spend less time commuting and much more time with my children. …
