Bid to Rescue RAF Station Suffers Rebuff

Only a handful of councillors have signed up to help save closure threatened RAF Boulmer, in Northumberland.

While thousands of people have signed petitions, most members of Newcastle Council failed to respond when asked for support.

Lib Dem, Ian Proud, asked all 77 colleagues on Newcastle Council to sign letters of support which he intended to present at an RAF open night at Newcastle Civic Centre.

So far he's received just 12 responses - ten from his Lib Dem colleagues and two from Labour councillors.

"I'm disappointed because this is not a party political issue," he said.

Coun Proud is now making a fresh appeal and is circulating petitions in some of the coastal areas which would be affected by the closure as well as Newcastle.

Rescue helicopters from the base operate all over the North East and Coun Proud, a Metro driver, said: "I feel very strongly about it. I often see the Sea King helicopters ferrying people to hospital as I'm driving around the system. …
