A listed railway station is to be used as a platform to display Chinese culture.

The Friends of Tynemouth Station have worked with the Buddle Arts Centre in Wallsend, the Children's University project and Chinese student Chun-Chao Chui to create a series of carp which are lit from within.

Youngsters made the fish at a Saturday course run at the arts centre by the Children's University, which is financed by the New Opportunities Fund and provides out-of-school activities.

The carp have taken shape under the guidance of Chun-Chao, who is from Taiwan and is working for a PhD in art at Newcastle University.

The fish will be part of a public Chinese New Year celebration from 1.30pm today at the Buddle centre, which will also include a lion dance and martial arts display, a fish dance created by Lisa Lee, and a fish in poetry and song performance by the North Tyneside Youth Theatre and Custom House Youth Theatre Group. …
