Girls Aloud singer Cheryl was today finishing her community service punishment after performing to a sell-out crowd at Newcastle's only gay club.

The chart topper spoke for the first time exclusively to the Chronicle about her "difficult year" which saw her being convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after attacking a nightclub toilet attendant.

Cheryl, 20, said she had learnt her lesson and that 2004 was going to be her year.

She also revealed she got through her most trying moments thanks to the support of her mum, Joan Callaghan.

Minutes later, she was the star of the show at Newcastle's Powerhouse, as the capacity 1,400-strong crowd chanted her name and cheered her as she and her band mates performed, watched on proudly by Joan.

"I have learned my lesson. It's been a very difficult year, I finished my community service today and now I am looking to the future," Cheryl told the Chronicle.

"2004 is going to be my year definitely. I want to put the past behind me."

Cheryl said she had been overwhelmed by the support she had received from North East fans and most particularly from Newcastle.

She added: "And my mum has been there for me throughout it all. She has been there and supported me when I have been at my lowest. A lot of stuff has been written and said about me but I have got skin as tough as leather boots. And I think most people take it with a pinch of salt."

Cheryl, of Heaton, Newcastle, denied any rumours of romance having been linked with Newcastle football player Kieron Dyer.

She said: "I have no time for romance, my career comes first these days and all my time is spent concentrating on that."

Cheryl has spent the majority of January in the North East finishing her 120 hours community service order. …
