Plans to cut legal aid would hit middle-class motorists MIDDLE-CLASS defendants accused of motoring offences would no longer be able to claim legal aid under plans for tighter curbs.

Ministers want to bring back a means test for defendants in magistrates' courts to force the better-off to pay for their own defence.

Those accused of motoring offences are a prime target because of their numbers and because, being a car owner, it is assumed they could afford the average [pounds sterling]300-[pounds sterling]500 cost of a court case. The proposal is likely to be in the forthcoming Criminal Defence Bill.

Man is killed and teenage girlfriend hurt in shooting A MAN in his early twenties died and his teenage girlfriend was injured after they were shot in a shop doorway early today.

Both victims were taken to hospital where the girl - whose wounds are not life-threatening - was undergoing treatment under armed police guard.
