THE standard format for orchestral concerts used to be overtureconcerto-symphony. Orchestras rarely do it that way these days, so there was something engagingly retro about the second concert in the Philharmonia's Dvor . ek series. Not that Janac . ek got a look in: instead, Smetana's Bartered Bride overture set the scene for Dvor . ak's Violin Concerto and Seventh Symphony.

Not much to get excited about there, you might think. Not so. As a Czech, conductor Jir .lohlavek knows this music rather well, but the performances weren't routine.

With rasping trombones and delirious piccolo, Smetana's overture sparkled, so that one almost wanted the whole opera; until Midori took the platform as . ak's Violin Concerto.

At 32, she's no longer a child prodigy, but she retains an innocent intensity. Crouched like a gladiator, she launched herself at the music as if it was an animal she must tame; and tame it she did, sometimes with a stamp of the foot, sometimes with an abrasive grate of bow on string. …
