A multi-racial organisation has unveiled plans to revitalise a community centre that closed controversially last year.

Community groups and students in the town were furious when the Richard Hind Centre in Yarm Lane, Parkfield, suddenly shut down in May.

The council-owned and community-run property opened in the early 1990s and was funded by the town's City Challenge project, but it ran into financial difficulties. The centre is still in the hands of receivers.

But Sacha Bedding, manager of Stockton's International Family Centre, plans to make it bigger and better, serving the whole community.

If all goes to plan, the centre will become the fourth building in the borough to be taken over by Stockton International Family Centre.

Running health, employment and education activities, the Richard Hind Centre has benefited more than 2,000 residents.

But Mr Bedding stresses it will be primarily used by the people of Parkfield.

He continued: "There is a misunderstanding that all we work with is black people, but we are multi-racial and our largest user group is white British citizens. …
